Specialty Equipment History
Specialty Equipment Company is a nationwide manufacturer of high-end filling machinery and material handling system. The company founders, a father and son, started the company as a welding job-shop.
The father purchased the property at 1221 Adkins Road then began using the garage as a shop for his welding and fabricating hobbies. After serving as an Army captain, the son joined his father and a new company was formed. A building extension was erected, additional machinery was acquired and together they began building drum and pallet conveyors for Dow, Exxon, DuPont, and other chemical companies in southern Texas. New conveyor products were added for drum, bag and bale handling. Applications including; pallet dispensers, bulk box conveyors, jump transfers, turntables, transfer cars, whatever type of special conveying customers wanted. The father and son reorganized their job shop and incorporated as Specialty Equipment Fabrication Company, a manufacturer of drum, bag, bale, and pallet conveyors for the chemical industry. A new building was erected. Two five ton cranes then followed along with additional fitters, welders, assemblers, etc. A new company name was created; Specialty Equipment Conveyor Company. Shortly after that, the father retired and the forty-two year old son purchased his fathers shares and took over as president. After a new vice president came on board markets were redefined and more handling products were introduced. More people were hired in sales and engineering. Another assembly plant expansion and additional products were added to the rapidly growing fabrication shop. Within a year the company had expanded from a regional to a national manufacturer. A new web site was created. A five year sales plan was developed and sales leads began pouring in from all over the country. National accounts were established and a new level of marketing was created to expand products and markets. An aggressive sales campaign was underway to establish national accounts with Specialty Equipment Conveyor Company as a single-source manufacturer and a preferred vendor to Fortune 500 chemical companies. Sales doubled, markets expanded, national accounts grew and a new drum palletizer was patented. More specialist were hired for sales and project management. Several additional buildings were erected, products expanded, the staff grew, and all design and engineering was being created on computer followed by computerized estimating, scheduling, and records management. The company name and logo was changed again, to Specialty Equipment. A new line of drum filling machines was created to compliment the conveying and palletizing systems. A new filling process, “product level tracking” was patented and the drum, pail and IBC filling product lines expanded into chemical, agricultural, cleaning, food, lube, and coating markets with a full line of filler accessories. A new sales manager was added to the staff. More key people were hired. New products were introduced. Three new national accounts were established. A special photo book was developed along with a new advertising campaign. Specialty became the largest manufacturer of drum filling, conveying, and palletizing systems in North America. More products were added and the list of national accounts grew. A new and more extensive advertising campaign was implemented. Additional national accounts were established. A more aggressive five year marketing program was created, which includes three new products and two new markets. Additional patents were approved and demonstration sites were established. Specialty Equipment created the first American made fully functioning, multi-purpose, automatic drum filling and capping machine, which was installed and is operating at a large chemical company while we await patent approval.
